Mushroom Reef Rockpools and Marine Treasure Hunt

  •  02/01/2024
     9:30 am - 11:30 am

Join us for a morning at Mushroom Reef Marine Sanctuary as we learn, discover and create magic at the rockpools! Mushroom Reef  Marine Sanctuary is a beautiful rockpool oasis located in Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula famous for its diversity of marine life, including sheltered rock pools, coves and a shallow reef on the ocean side as well as sandstone rock platforms extending from the shore. The reefs and rocks are home to diverse marine life, thanks to the ‘micro-habitats’ formed in the cracks and crevices of ancient basalt and seagrass meadows in the surrounding seabed. These unique underwater landscapes allow many different marine creatures to live close together.

Come and join us for an interactive workshop out on the rockpools discovering the magnificent marine life and going on a secret beach treasure hunt! Children will use their new found navigation skills using natural navigation such as the sun and a compass to find hidden clues about the marine life that live at this stunning rockpool oasis.

This workshop is run by Early Childhood Educator Nina.

As a protected marine sanctuary, we want to do our bit to help protect the marine life and clean up any plastic we find so we ask you to tread carefully and be gentle on the rock pools, remove nothing and please wear soft shoes on the platforms and reefs. If you see any rubbish then please pick it up or let us know as we always take a bin to collect  and clean the sanctuary. All materials are bought for the craft activities.

Ages: 4 – 10 years (siblings under 14 months are welcome to attend for free although young siblings are not advised to come due to the slippery rocks).

*Parents are responsible for their children at all times.
