Saturday Forest School – Westerfolds Park

  •  01/09/2018
     10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join us for a morning immersed outdoors, in the bush and create memories and a deep connection to nature that will last forever. At Forest School, your child is supported by qualified and experienced educators who will teach them bush survival skills and how to use/make tools while making friends and building confidence in the outdoors. If you have a curious child, a child that loves to climb, build, run and be free, then our forest school is for them. We’ll embark on many adventures through the bush where we learn, discover and explore our natural environment and it’s fascinating wildlife.

The morning will start off with an exciting bush walk and adventure to the bushland, crossing creeks, looking for wildlife, wombat burrows, tracking, climbing and gathering materials for our fire. We’ll be covering essential bush survival skills and the kids will get to build as a group their own shelter. Then on return to the main site, the children will learn all about fire and fire safety. Why do we need fire? What materials are gathered to build one? The children will learn how to safely use a flint and light their own fire. We will then prepare a meal and cook a delicious lunch over the fire to share with our friends.

Our forest school aims to inspire creativity, a natural curiosity and enriching sensory play experience while seeking to follow their interests and a instill a love of learning. We also ensure that children learn to use their bodies so that they develop strength, good balance and coordination while learning to take safe risks with guidance and support from the educators.

This workshop is run by  Adam and Melinda.

Melinda is the founder of Eco Explorers and a Forest School Leader. She has been running bush programs for children for over two years and has over 20 years experience working with families.

Adam spent his entire childhood in the bush, living off-grid, climbing mountains, playing in rivers, learning to fish, track, make fires and simplify ‘being’ in nature. He now hopes to share his childhood experiences with the next generation to inspire a deep connection to nature. He has a background in Outdoor Education and enjoys camping, rock climbing and meditation.

Forest school is an all weather outdoor program so you need to make sure you bring appropriate weather protection and clothing. Children must have closed footwear when walking in the bush, sun hats, sunscreen, wet weather gear, plenty of snacks and water and a change of clothes. Our program will only be cancelled in the event of an extreme weather warning; fire, storm, high temperatures and strong wind.

Ages: 6-12 years
